Hyla Crucifer erzählen Geschichten. Die Protagonist:innen ihres Albums «Garments» stecken im Alltagstrott fest («The Same»), sind überfordert von der Moderne oder verheddern sich in Entschuldigungen («Heiner»). Doch die Musik des Berner Quintetts erzählt dazu ihre eigene Geschichte. Vom Schlagzeuger und Komponisten Lukas Briner 2020 zusammengetrommelt, vereint die Band fünf Musiker:innen, welche in diversen anderen Bands die Jazzszene aufmischen (Tie Drei, Oort Cloud, Ysop). Hyla schwelgt aber auch in der Unbekümmertheit des Pop und schätzt die Direktheit von Spoken Word: «Garments», 2023 erschienen, zeigt das breite Spektrum der Band. Da gleitet eine kaum erkennbare Posaune über einen düsteren, holprigen Groove, der die Band und das Publikum beinahe in den Strudel reisst. Doch schon im nächsten Stück löst sich die Spannung in betörende Harmonie auf. «You don’t turn around – keep going.»

Hyla Crucifer tell stories. Their protagonists are stuck in the daily routine, are overwhelmed by modernity or get tangled up in excuses. But the music of the Bernese quintet tells its own story. The five musicians, who are active in the German-Swiss music scene in various other bands (Tie Drei, Oort Cloud, Pamplona Grup), have their roots in jazz, but also revel in the carefreeness of pop and like the directness of spoken word. Their album “Garments”, released in 2023, showcases the band's broad spectrum. A barely recognizable trombone glides over a dark, bumpy groove that almost pulls the band and the audience into a vortex. But in the very next track, the tension dissolves into infatuating harmony. “You don't turn around—keep going.”
